A circuit breaker is a device that helps protect a home or business from electrical fires or other related hazards due to an overload of electricity. It does this by automatically ‘tripping’ the flow of electricity when it senses too much current. This prevents further problems like short circuiting, which can occur if an appliance or device draws too much power from the mains.

But how does a circuit breaker work? Well, the answer lies in its electromagnet. This electromagnet contains two parts: an armature, which is an electrically-conductive metal bar, and a coil wrapped around it. When the flow of electricity reaches a certain level, the armature gets magnetized, and the coil begins to create a magnetic field. This magnetic field pulls on the armature, opening the switch and cutting off the flow of electricity.

Now, GCSE students might need to learn more about the specifics of this process in order to understand it fully. Basically, the current travels through the coil, causing a build-up of magnetic flux. When the current reaches a certain level that cannot be tolerated, the magnetic flux flips the switch, which then breaks the circuit. This disrupts the flow of electricity, preventing further damage or a potential electrical fire.

To sum up, a circuit breaker is a device that prevents electrical overloads or short-circuits by breaking the circuit when the current reaches a certain level.
