An understanding of parallel circuits is important for children to learn in KS2. A parallel circuit is a circuit where the components are connected together in such a way that they create multiple paths for electricity to flow through. This means that if one component in the circuit fails, the other components remain connected and still work.

One of the most common examples of a parallel circuit is a light switch. The switch has two switches, each of which is connected to the light bulb. When the switch is closed, electricity flows through either switch, allowing the light to turn on. If one switch fails, the other switch will still be able to turn the light on.

Another example of a parallel circuit is a series of lights connected to a battery. Each light is connected to the battery in its own circuit. If one light burns out, the other lights will stay illuminated because there are multiple paths for the electricity to flow. This can be useful in a variety of situations, such as keeping emergency lights illuminated in case of a power failure.

Parallel circuits are not limited to just lights; they are also used in a variety of electrical and electronic devices. For example, a laptop uses a parallel circuit when it is charging. The adapter is connected to the laptop’s power supply, allowing electricity to flow through the different components and charge the battery.

By learning about parallel circuits in KS2, children can understand how electricity works in their everyday lives. This knowledge can help them to better understand the world around them and how to use electricity safely.
